birthday lists, or not?
Posted by brookem under contemplation, daily, dating, girly stuff, good heads of hair turn me on, lists, more than you ever wanted to know, now we sip champagne when we thirst-ayThat birthday list that I was thinking of busting out? It’s not coming along too well.
The thing is, I’m just not good with stuff like that. It’s like when you actually have money to spend, say, a gift card or something, and you can’t find a single thing you want. When it seems like you were just at the same store shopping the previous week, and you saw a gazillion items screaming your name.
It’s like that, sort of. My stepdad called me last week and told me to email him a few things I think I’d like. He said he didn’t want to just send me a check, felt like that was too impersonal. Well, I thought and thought. Running shoes? How could he pick them out? Asking him to replenish my liquor cabinet? Too much? What about a Coach wristlet? Then I’d feel impersonal/weird sending him a simple link. I couldn’t come up with anything in particular. He had suggested new bike tires or some triathlon gear, but the truth is, this year my heart just isn’t as into the triathlon thing. Hopefully next season I’ll be more in check in regards to that, but this year, not so much.
Since I didn’t come up with Special Suggestions, he ended up going with the check after all. He called me last night and told me it was coming. Said how he felt bad for just sending a check, mentioned how he felt that wasn’t as thoughtful and personal as he’d like, and I could see his point. He wanted to do something meaningful and special. I just couldn’t come up with the suggestions for him.
And similarly, I am having a hell of a time coming up with any sort of birthday list to post here. A couple other bloggers have said how exciting! they are, and while in theory, making a list of any and everything I’d want does sound like fun, I’m just having trouble whipping it all up.
I’m kind of more a… know it when I see it kind of girl. Know what I’m saying?
Though, I wouldn’t mind gifting myself or getting gifted these earrings, this ring, this necklace (similar to an angel necklace I have, mine has gotten a little tarnished), a pair of Chuck Taylors that I design, oh and why not?- this necklace too, pretty much anything from the first bedroom here, … and well, maybe some bedroom time there (since we’re on the subject) with Papelbon and his good HOH, and a few brewskis with this guy.
Hmm, maybe it wasn’t as hard as I thought.
Oh, lastly, I’d like to have Lauren Conrad’s* hair stylist for a week- if I’m being choosy here, why not?
*Don’t tell me you haven’t thought of how to recreate this braid on yourself! My roommate and I may or may not have spent an hour whilst watching last night’s episode playing hair stylist on each other trying to get this look down. So not as easy as one might think. Tia, your thoughts on this?

I think gifts are just hard now. We tend to be in places in life where we get what we want. Not that we don’t love gifts, but we can’t even begin to think of what we want because usually we just see and buy. Or, I do at least. That’s why I hate the “what do you want” stuff. If someone finds something awesome that makes them think of me, great. If not, that is totally fine, drink a couple of beers with me or make some cupcakes or something and that is great too. I just can’t get into the whole “I want to get something special but don’t have a clue, you tell me what thoughtful thing to buy you”
LC kinda makes me want to grow my hair out.
April 30, 2008 at 12:47 am
Oh, and now I’m off designing Chuck Taylors. This is fun. And I would live in my Chucks if I could.
April 30, 2008 at 2:29 am
aww i feel so special!
the hardest part about this braid is that it’s basically a corn-rowed french braid, so you have to keep it tight, and you also have to keep picking up strands rather than doing any “regular” braiding.
i suggest trying it on your friend when the hair is wet to minimize slippage, and sectioning out the part you want to braid, securing the rest back in a ponytail to get it out of your way. if you’re doing it on yourself, and you’re right handed, i suggest starting on the left side and working over.
it’s hard to french braid your own hair, especially that way, so don’t be too hard on yourself & good luck!!

When people ask me what I want I’m always a little surprised because I think I’m such an easy person to shop for. Apparently not.
I will hold onto a gift card forever because, like you, although a week ago the store had everything I wanted but couldn’t afford, with the free money burning a hole in my pocket I can’t find anything. You have to make the purchase count you know! Invariably, two days after I spend the gift card I see something I really, really want.
April 30, 2008 at 3:18 am
Tia, please come live with me and do my hair every morning. I can pay you in chocolate chip cookies.
April 30, 2008 at 4:31 am
Fact. Joel Mchale is probably the most funnest person on TV I’ve ever met in real life.
I will buy you a triathlon for you b-day. How much do they cost?
April 30, 2008 at 8:11 am
First part of your bday gift is sitting on my bedroom floor. Given the timing of your trip, I’m waiting to send it, so you’re there when it arrives. Second part of your bday gift is now on it’s way. Sometimes posting bday lists is a good thing. Very good thing. :-) Have a great trip later this week! The sun and time with your mom and pal will do you good!
April 30, 2008 at 8:20 am
Oh my lord, the braid! That’s all I could think about all last night! How does she DO that?!
April 30, 2008 at 8:48 am
Maybe I am a little biased but doesn’t LC always look so fab? I love her & Lo. Moving on to birthday lists, I hear ya! I hate sounding presumptious when people ask me, what do you want for your birthday (this goes for Christmas as well!) - I have a really hard time answering that question and usually go with the whole, really I don’t NEED anything speal.
I totally agree with Lisa H - something thoughtful goes a long way, dinner, drinks, good convo & of course cupcakes never hurt.
April 30, 2008 at 8:51 am
birthdays are definitely hard now - its not easy to make a list with something that doesnt cost 500 bucks!
Speaking on the subject of hair on the hills, are you as offended by Stephanie Pratt’s 80’s hair/bangs combo as I am?? Look out for it next week its terrible!!!
April 30, 2008 at 8:54 am
Birthdays and gifts are so hard…It’s so hard to tell someone what you want. I usually just get money, which is fine with me. Then I can buy clothes or whatever I want to…I like that! :)
April 30, 2008 at 9:25 am
I could do the braid to you! I’m a good french braider on other people, just not on myself.
Also, Designing your own chucks? AWESOME!!
April 30, 2008 at 9:42 am
oooh, those necklaces are super cute. Love them.
April 30, 2008 at 9:49 am
I want that stupid braid in my hair too. I wish I could do it!
April 30, 2008 at 10:50 am
If it were my birhday and I were thinking practical, I’d have a tank of gas for the car on that list. :) Almost getaway time!
April 30, 2008 at 11:08 am
I’m starting to do my birthday list too and I need to figure out a classy, unspoiled, unselfish way of say “Just give me money!”
Any suggestions? :)
April 30, 2008 at 11:19 am
I know I would look like an overgrown 8 year old with that hairstyle - but it didn’t make me want it any less either.
April 30, 2008 at 11:25 am
That braid is pretty sweet. I do that for my nieces all the time! Tia’s suggestion on how to recreate that looks good. That’s how I do it for my nieces when we have girly days.
I hear you on making a list. It’s easy when you’re look at stuff that you want and there is no pressure…the lists is endless! But the minute someone asks for a list, I clam up. I just feel awkward telling them what to buy for me! I dont know…I’m weird like that though.
April 30, 2008 at 11:29 am
There really should be Birthday Registry website, if there isn’t already. After all the baby shower/engagement/bridal shower/wedding/housewarming gifts I’ve given, I’d like some payback.
April 30, 2008 at 11:58 am
I’m with you. I think the idea of making a list excites me more than just making the list. Especially if I can’t put “45′ sailboat” on the list.
And what was it about that braid?!
April 30, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Whenever I’m asked what I want as a gift I too have a hard time coming up with something. The things I want are not appropriate to ask others to get for me because they are too expensive or grandios.
Hmmmmm……
April 30, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I didn’t know you were a triathlete. That’s awesome!
I tend to keep a running list of practical things I need and just pass it on to family at my bday and Christmas. This makes them mad because I’m always asking for things like tupperware and new steak knives…not so fun to buy.
April 30, 2008 at 12:46 pm
I’m the same way! I can never think of birthday ideas when someone asks, but then always think of ideas at other times. I’ve started being a nerd and keeping a list with me in my notebook/agenda so when I think of something I can add it to the list.
I also keep present ideas for other people so I have ideas when the time comes around. Otherwise I’m hopeless at it.
April 30, 2008 at 1:50 pm
I like Kate Bosworth’s sister on The Hills. She’s right about that Spencer guy. She also enjoys shopping at renovated Targets. Birthdays in May are kind of lame.
April 30, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Kaboodle.com is the best listing website ever. You can make wish lists, birthday lists, lists of HOHs if you like! Check it out :) I also love that you troll my favorite websites — anthro & etsy being Top 2
April 30, 2008 at 2:29 pm
my mom hates sending me checks too - but sometimes that’s the best bet for me to get what I REALLY want (which is sometimes just paying off credit card bills…). I told her that I’ll let her know what I end up buying for myself and that seemed to appease her - at least for the moment.
Domino also has a wish list for home stuff which is awesome…and then you can just add stuff as you see it without feeling the birthday pressure. Somehow, after my bday passes, I always end up feeling like I remember 750 things that I want…
April 30, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Either I’m really, REALLY good at B’day lists or I suck a whoooole helluvalot
No happy medium for me.
April 30, 2008 at 4:04 pm
oooh i know EXACTLY what you mean with lists! and items to buy! how come it works like that….! it seriously annoys me when i think of things after the fact…and i ALWAYS do!
April 30, 2008 at 4:39 pm
lisa h- i do the same thing! if i see something i want, i usually just get it then. unless it’s something really pricy, but then that wouldnt be something id want to ask for from someone either! beers and cupcakes is the BEST idea!
lisa h- isnt it fun?! what color are yours?
tia- i LOVE all those tips! good idea about trying out it out on wet hair. do you end up doing all of your girlfriend’s hair?
dingo- im the same way. i hold on to gift cards for freakin ever!
dingo- ha, and ill pay her in cocktails. maybe we can get her to meet us halfway?
rs27- wait, have you met him?! he IS hysterical. a triathlon? oh that’s nice of you… they go for about $85 bucks. kind of a pretty penny so early in our relationship though, huh?
nilsa- i cant believe you are sending me a gift! im so excited and so lucky to have such a good friend!
la- i KNOW!! look at tia’s how-to comment above!
semichrmd- i agree, i always love lc and lo’s style. they never ever wear the same thing twice!? cupcakes and cocktails would be fabulous!
dreamgrrl- i know what you mean about the high priced items! i usually get anything else i want, and it’s the pricy stuff i sometimes hold out on, and that’s the stuff i wouldnt want to ask for from someone else! oh, you know my thoughts on stephanies rockin 80’s bangs! poor girl needs to take a serious straightener to her HOH!
are you willing to change- money is good. but i often end up just putting it in the bank, and i want to make a point instead to put it aside for something special, you know? rather than use it for say… gas, or something silly like that.
tiff- really?! oh i just got really excited. can you move here? we can braid hair and watch lost together!
dutchess of kickball- hey there, thanks for stopping by! arent they cool? i should just buck up and buy the things.
jamie- (ha, i just wrote out a comment to “braid” instead of “jamie”… oops!) i want it toooo!
chris- sooo expensive it is these days!
April 30, 2008 at 4:50 pm
littlespoon- ha, well you just said it! that came out pretty well! when’s your bday?
ammanners- totally. i was thinking that the other night. i looked about 12.
sicilian mama- im the same way. i can never think of much, and when i do, i dont like asking. except the time that i asked my dad for the whole series dvd set of SATC. i felt FINE about asking for that. totally fine. and you know, for some reason i can totally picture you being able to rock out some good braids! i want to come over for a girls day with you.
freckledk- hey, thanks for stopping by over here. you’re totally right about the bday registry site. id be so down for that!
justrun- ha, the sailboat… yeah, i know, it’s like, where is the price limit to these lists? hmm. they’re fun to think up in your head, but the actual execution of it is tough. the braid is just so… so SOMEthing. i cant put my finger on it, but i like it. something different maybe?
the diva’s thoughts- thanks for coming over here! i know what you mean. i feel like id be going too overboard to ask someone for a big expensive coach bag, or something.
mel heth- well, i guess you could say that! i did two last summer and im in a triathlon club. im the “social chair,” haha! and, well, at least you keep an updated idea of what you want for gifts! better than i can say!
caz- i know! i like your idea of jotting down ideas for friends though. i think of something and then when it’s the time to actually buy it, i totally forget!
egan- this whole comment in it’s entirety (sp?) makes me chuckle. because really, who IS kate bosworth’s sister on the hills? the fact that you pulled that out of your ass really amuses me. are you a taurus too? just wondering. ps- send my love to mick beachy, please.
laralu- i am not surprised that we like these same websites! dont you wish you could actually afford some of the stuff on anthro though? ugh. thanks for the website, im on my way to check it out now! xx
michelle- that always happens! the bday is gone and THEN you think of what you want! thanks for the website!
deutlich- i hear you. im the same way.
libby- i know! that’s wicked annoying and it always happens! i guess keeping a running list all year long is the best bet!
April 30, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Ah yes, the LC Braid! I’ve tried to do that to my hair in the past, with no success. It looks really cool, but is HARD to do.
I can rarely think of birthday gifts when asked. This year I decided what I really want is a new Blizzard Cake from Dairy Queen. :)
April 30, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Oh I loved making birthday wish lists, yours is at least reasonable stuff, I sort of asked for the impossible, haha.
April 30, 2008 at 6:25 pm
I love the braid! I’ll have to try that sometime!
When’s the birthday? Mine’s on the 6th.
Happy Birthday!
April 30, 2008 at 6:36 pm
I love Talk Soup! i bet Joel Mchale is a riot to just shoot the shit and latest “Hills” gossip with, not to mention try out your LC new do!
Did Lo become a little less “sweet-n-lo” since moving in? Think Audrina is gonna last in the guest house? Dare put Justin Bobby’s new do as your HOH?
April 30, 2008 at 9:32 pm
i tried and succeeded in doing the braid headband thingy. one night my roommate and i tried it on me. it looked good actually.
i’m thinking about testing it out this weekend.
and anything from anthropologie is just glorious. swoon.
May 1, 2008 at 1:43 am
Tell me about it… people keep asking me what I want for graduation. I know that the logical response is money but come-on, I’d so love some Tiffanys, or anything designer. ha
May 7, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I agree. My sister likes to do things (her birthday is Friday) i like to have something for her to open. We’ve compromised. I always get her a little something to open, but mostly I buy her a ticket to a cool event for us to do to together. Dad is getting her a gift certificate for a facial.– stuff like that.
Yay Birthdays!!!!
May 7, 2008 at 5:40 pm
[...] Speaking of gifts!!!! Remember this ring that I had on my birthday wish list last week?!! Well guess what? My good good bloggy-turned-real-life friend Miss Nilsa went ahead [...]
May 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm
omg, I LOOOOOVE that wing necklace!! It is fabulous!!
